JBL Flip 7 vs Flip 6: IP68, 7-Band EQ, PushLock and Auracast
Key takeaways
- The JBL Flip 7 adds IP68 protection, a 7-band EQ, PushLock mounting and Auracast over the Flip 6.
- It launched in the US at $149.95 and plays up to 14 hours, or 16 with Playtime Boost.
- Best for bathroom and outdoor use. It has no mic and won’t pair with PartyBoost speakers.

In the JBL Flip 7 vs Flip 6 matchup, the newer speaker’s biggest changes are durability and flexibility. Those matter most for a speaker that lives in the bathroom, where shower spray and constant humidity are everyday conditions.
The JBL Flip 7 is a portable Bluetooth speaker with IP68 water and dust resistance, 35W of output and a 7-band EQ. Compared with the Flip 6, it changes the water rating, the way it mounts and the wireless standard. That matters if you want a speaker for the bathroom or outdoors.

IP68 water and dust resistance
The Flip 7 is rated IP68 for water and dust. JBL’s lab test covers up to 30 minutes in 4.9 ft (1.5 m) of fresh water. So it is comfortable next to a sink or a bathtub where water splashes easily.
It is also built to survive a 3.3 ft (1 m) drop onto concrete. That takes some worry out of knocking it off a bathroom shelf or a camping table.

The fabric grille uses 100% recycled material. If water or soapy water gets on it, rinse it with clean water and let it dry fully. The Flip 7 does not float, so near a bathtub or pool it is safer to secure it with the strap or a hook.
Don’t plug in a cable while the USB-C port is still wet. Even a waterproof speaker can be damaged if you charge it with a wet port, so let it dry completely first.

35W output and a 7-band EQ
The Flip 7 uses a 35W two-way setup: a 1.8×3.1 in (45×80 mm) woofer at 25W RMS plus a 0.6 in (16 mm) tweeter at 10W RMS. The woofer and tweeter handle the lows and highs. AI Sound Boost analyzes the audio signal to reduce the distortion that can creep in at high volume.

In a tiled room like a bathroom, sound bounces off the walls, so bass can get boomy and vocals can get buried. The 7-band EQ in the JBL Portable app lets you tune the sound to the room more finely. Pulling the bass down a little and raising the mids helps voices and podcasts stay clear even with the shower running.
The Flip 6 offered a 3-band EQ, so the adjustment range is noticeably wider. That also makes it easier to dial in the sound you want when you move between the bathroom, a bedroom and the outdoors.

PushLock mounting and up to 14 hours of battery
The Flip 7 adds the PushLock system. You can remove the standard strap and swap in a carabiner-style accessory, so the speaker can sit on a shelf or hang from a hook. In the bathroom it can hang from a shower hook or towel bar, and outdoors from a bag or tent. That gives you more options than the Flip 6’s fixed strap.

The 4,800mAh battery plays for up to 14 hours on a charge. Turning on Playtime Boost adds up to two more hours by trimming some bass output to save power. If you mostly use it for short showers or in the kitchen, you can go a long time between charges.

The Flip 7 also supports lossless audio over a wired USB-C connection, up to 24-bit/96kHz. Use Bluetooth on the move, and plug it in next to a desk or laptop.

JBL Flip 7 vs Flip 6: what changed
If you own a Flip 6, look beyond sound quality to the differences in water rating, wireless standard, EQ and mounting. JBL announced the Flip 6 in 2021 with an IP67 rating, Bluetooth 5.1 and up to 12 hours of playback, so the Flip 7 adds about two hours before Playtime Boost.
| Feature | JBL Flip 6 | JBL Flip 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Water and dust | IP67, 3.3 ft (1 m) depth | IP68, 4.9 ft (1.5 m) depth, plus 3.3 ft drop resistance |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.1 | Bluetooth 5.4 |
| App EQ | 3-band | 7-band |
| Multi-speaker link | PartyBoost | Auracast |
| Mounting | Fixed strap | Swappable PushLock |
| Speaker setup | Racetrack woofer, separate tweeter, dual passive radiators | 35W two-way: 25W woofer plus 10W tweeter |
| Battery life | Up to 12 hours | Up to 14 hours, 16 with Playtime Boost |
| Launch | November 2021, £129.99 in the UK | April 2025, $149.95 in the US |
IP68, the 7-band EQ and PushLock make the Flip 7 more useful in the bathroom and outdoors. If you mostly use a Flip 6 indoors for casual listening, though, there may be little reason to replace it.

The connection system changed too. The Flip 6’s PartyBoost and the Flip 7’s Auracast multi-speaker support are not compatible. The Flip 7 also has no microphone for calls, so it cannot be used as a speakerphone.
JBL Flip 7 questions before you buy
A few practical points to check first.
Can I charge the JBL Flip 7 over USB-C while I shower?
It isn’t recommended. If there is water or steam on or around the charging port, let it dry fully before plugging in.
Does the JBL Flip 7 float if it falls into a tub or pool?
No, the Flip 7 does not float. When using it near deep water, secure it with the strap or a hook.
Can the JBL Flip 7 play together with a Flip 6?
No. The Flip 6 uses PartyBoost and the Flip 7 uses Auracast, so the two cannot be linked directly. If you plan to use several speakers together, check which standard they support first.

Who should buy the JBL Flip 7?
Pick the Flip 7 if one speaker has to move between the shower, the kitchen and a campsite. The more often it sits where water splashes, or the more ways you want to hang it, the more the upgrade over the Flip 6 pays off.
If your Flip 6 mostly plays indoors, it can keep doing that job. In the JBL Flip 7 vs Flip 6 choice, the upgrade pays off when the speaker goes near a pool or tub, rides on a bag or bike, or has to play alongside newer Auracast speakers. For a first portable Bluetooth speaker, the Flip 7 is worth comparing for both indoor and outdoor use.
